Hiking in the Dolomite Alps is a spectacular and emotional experience. Messner himself has called the Dolomites the most beautiful mountains on earth. Suffice it to say, we can easily believe a man who has stood atop all of the planet’s eight-thousanders. The Dolomites are ideally arranged for multi-day hiking tours. Thousands of hikers traverse the Dolomites every summer, even without a guide. They often do so entirely independently, using only a map and the step-by-step hiking itineraries that our guides have put together.
The Dolomites have all you could possibly need for guided hiking, as well as for self-guided hikes. The trails are carefully signposted, and the markings are regularly updated. A marker post with direction signs can be found at each fork in the path. These show the direction and designated number of each trail, as well as the time required to reach the next check point. This might be a pass, mountain hut, or fork in the track. Getting lost in the Dolomites is almost impossible, especially with the specialized hiking maps and detailed descriptions of the route, right down to each turning, that we provide.
One characteristic feature of the Dolomites is their extensive network of mountain huts or “rifugios”, which are much more comfortable here than in any other area of the Alps. We have charted out hut-to-hut hiking tours of varying lengths, with reliable and functional mountain huts at the required points, where you can have lunch or stay the night. Types of accommodation in the mountain huts vary. You might wish to choose the traditional Alpine option of a dormitory, usually for 6 to 10 guests. In addition, most of the huts have private rooms for two, three, or four guests, to be occupied only by you and your family or friends. Most mountain huts in the Dolomites feature hot showers.
Despite their distance from civilization, excellent food is amply provided in the Dolomites mountain huts, where typical meals might be a combination of traditional Alpine and classic Italian cuisines. These include Alpine cheeses, salted speck, risotto, pasta, or dumplings. All this is prepared with local ingredients, such as herbs, mushrooms, and berries. Hikers consistently praise the cuisine and hospitality of the mountain huts we select for our Dolomites hiking tours. It is worth mentioning that breakfast and evening meals at huts on the itinerary are included in the cost of our hut-to-hut hiking tours.
Yet another convenience of the hiking tours in the Dolomites is that hikers do not need to carry a heavy backpack with food and a tent. Tents are prohibited in nature reserves, but along the route they aren’t needed anyway, due to the mountain huts’ warm accommodation, hot showers and ample food. Therefore, the Dolomites only require a 35-40-liter backpack, in which to carry clothing and light snacks.
Our carefully planned Dolomites hiking tours allow you to be at one with nature, as you travel along the route for several days and spend the nights in huts and inns. You can really feel the cozy atmosphere in these mountain huts. In addition, the Dolomites boast their famous sunsets, when the mountains are bathed in an orange hue. From a height of over two thousand meters, the view is staggering and far more impressive than from a hotel balcony at the bottom of a valley.
