Malé in Val di Sole
Experienced hikers in the Alps mostly choose self-guided hiking tours. These are treks without a guide or a group. The self-guided hiking format lets you immerse in nature and discover the mountains in complete freedom and independence. You will walk to a new hut each day at your own pace and along a route you preferred and planned with our support.
There are numerous hut-to-hut hiking itineraries for self-guided hiking to choose from. The Dolomites obviously feature the largest number of such tours. That is due to a fact that there are many huts in the Dolomites, and there is a large network of well-maintained trails. Normally, you would pass by one or more huts on the way to your destination hut, thus having a possibility of a shelter to wait out bad weather. On a self-guided tour in the Dolomites, you are unlikely to experience difficulties with navigation. For a first self-guided hiking experience, we normally recommended one of our Level 2 or Level 3 hut-to-hut treks in the Dolomites.
Self-guided hiking in more remote parts of the Alps requires prior experience and navigation skills. Trails are typically maintained well, but they are less trodden and therefore less visible in the rocky high-altitude areas. The density of the huts is also lower in the remote part of the Alps. Distant mountain groups, such as Ortler and Pennine Alps, are excellent for those self-guided hikers which prefer wilderness and solitude.
We design our self-guided hut-to-hut hiking tours based on the classical as well as off-the-beaten-track itineraries. Typically, the classical hiking itineraries reach the most famous landmarks. More hikers walk along such routes. For our off-the-beaten-path hiking tours, we select the least visited areas with untouched nature, minimal infrastructure and low tourism.
Regardless of whether you choose a classical or off-the-beaten-path itinerary, a self-guided trek must be planned carefully and in advance. AT MONT Trekking, we offer guidance with our self-guided hut-to-hut hiking tours. Our self-guided hikers receive advice on which itinerary is best on specific dates. Most of our hut-to-hut hiking tours come with a set of route options. We recommend the optimal one given the target difficulty level and available time for the hike. We provide detailed and verified step-by-step hiking schedules, the best hiking maps available for the region of the hike and, in the Dolomites, even electronic maps with a satellite navigation feature. We help our guests plan the logistics and provide the guidelines for public transportations that we verify regularly. Finally, it goes without saying that we arrange and pay for the accommodation at huts and base camp hotels as part our self-guided hut-to-hut hiking tours.
We believe it is ultimately important that our self-guided hikers know they can reach us at any time in case of emergency. We provide 24-hour on-call support.
