Description

The Grandview Trek features the most impressive natural sites around Cortina d’Ampezzo connected by panoramic hiking trails. This itinerary runs in the mountain groups west of the town - Tofane, Nuvolau and Croda da Lago. These mountains were some of the first in the Dolomites to be explored by alpinists in the 19th century. They accommodate historic mountain huts that were among the first manned huts in the Dolomites and Italian Alps overall. Many of these huts were built in exceptionally picturesque locations and are now great places for a lunch break or overnight stop.

The itinerary of the Grandview Trek runs hut to hut along normal hiking trails. It features varying terrains, but most of the route runs through alpine pastures above the treeline, i.e at the elevation of 1900 - 2300 meters. These are usually open landscapes with great vistas. West of the Tofane group, the itinerary ascends to the rocky high-altitude area and reaches its highest point of almost 2800 meters near Lagazuoi. There are two beautiful lakes along the route. The tiny Lago Limedes on the northern slope of the Nuvolau group offers the best view of Tofane. On the final hiking day, the route reaches Lago Federa, which lies off the most popular hiking trails and remains an oasis of silence and tranquility.

Some of the trails of the Grandview Trek were first trodden centuries ago by shepherds. Many other trails in the area appeared at the beginning of the 20th century just before and during World War I. Today's peaceful mountains, the Cortina Dolomites were the epicenter of the tactical confrontation and fighling between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. The Grandview Treks crosses the WWI frontline near Passo Falzarego. The area of the trek preserves numerous testimonies of the conflict such as trenches, tunnels, military shelters and fortifications.

The Grandview Trek is a circular hut-to-hut hiking adventure with the base camp in the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Hotel accommodation in Cortina will be arranged for you for the nights before and after the hike. Non-hiking luggage can be stored at the base campo hotel. The huts along the route provide a good level of service - accommodation and boarding, thus eliminating the need to carry overly heavy backpacks. Transport of luggage between huts can be arranged as an option, which, however, affects the choice of huts and may not be available at all legs of the itinerary. The trails along the route do not represent technical difficulties, do not require technical gear and are accessible to everyone with a normal level of fitness. These are famous trails connecting several best-known landmarks of the Dolomites, thus an hour of solitude at a time is the maximum you can expect in this area during the months of July and August. The Grandview Trek can be planned as a self-guided or private guided hiking trip.

In addition to the hut-to-hut hike, the Grandview Trek can be complemented by one-day hikes from Cortina d’Ampezzo. The two itineraries we recommend for day hikes are Tre Cime and Lake Sorapis.

Primary Itinerary: 6 Day Tour

Day 1: Cortina d'Ampezzo

Today, you arrive on your own in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the base camp location for this trek. It is a small resort town in the east of the Dolomites region. Cortina d’Ampezzo is one of the oldest alpine resorts. It is often called the Queen of the Dolomites as it is surrounded by some of the most famous Dolomite mountains. The skyline of Cortina is dominated by the peaks of Tofane, Cristallo and Antelao. Cortina is a town with the spirit of art, history, mountaineering and nature. Many of our guests stay in Cortina d'Ampezzo for an additional day or two before or after their hut-to-hut hike.

Day 2: Tofane Group

Ascent 1080 m. Descent 280 m. Altitude 1220 - 2580 m. Distance 9 km. Walking time 5 hours.

The main itinerary starts at the foot of the Tofane group in a place known as Col Drusciè. It is reachable with a ski lift from Cortina. Col Drusciè hosts a popular alpine restaurant featuring a terrace with an impressive view of the mountains above the town of Cortina d’Ampezzo. From Col Drusciè, the trail snakes on the slopes of Tofane, first through a pine forest, then just above the treeline, until you reach the rocky high altitude area. Part of the Natural Park of the Ampezzo Dolomites, the Tofane chain frames the Ampezzo Valley with its 3 massive and imposing peaks. During the First World War, the Tofane was a front line separating the positions of the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. Trenches and tunnels made by the military survived till the present day on the slopes of the Tofane.

Day 3: Lagazuoi Massif

Ascent 830 m. Descent 750 m. Altitude 2030 - 2750 m. Distance 9 km. Walking time 5 hours.

You will descend into the wild and beautiful Val Travenanzes this morning. This 11 km long isolated valley separates the group of Tofane from the Lagazuoi mountain. Its upper part is a narrow gorge with numerous waterfalls. This is where you enter Val Travenanzes today. Despite the altitude, this area features rich flora thanks to the abundance of water. Another highlight of the day and of the entire itinerary is Lagazuoi, the Dolomites’ most famous observation deck and a place of historical importance. Besides a fantastic panorama of the Dolomites, Lagazuoi features a well-preserved extended system of World War I tunnels and trenches. Lagazuoi accommodates a hut of the same name. The terrace of Rifugio Lagazuoi with its impressive panorama is the optimal place for lunch today. You will either reach the Passo Falzarego pass in the afternoon or stay overnight at the Lagazuoi hut depending on the availability at the huts in the area and your preferences for the accommodation.

Day 4: Nuvolau and Cinque Torri

Ascent 690 m. Descent 510 m. Altitude 2000 - 2750 m. Distance 10 km. Walking time 5 hours.

From Passo Falzarego you will head southwards and cross the Nuvolau group. One of the two its highest peaks, Monte Nuvolau, is easily accessible and features a beautiful 360-degree panorama capturing more than dozen neighboring mountain groups including Tofane, Cristallo, Sorapis, Croda da Lago, Antelao, Pelmo, Civetta, Pale di San Martino, Marmolada and Sella. The summit is accessible on a normal hiking trail but can be bypassed in case of unfavorable weather. Another major landmark in this area is Cinque Torri or Five Towers. It owes its name to a uniquely shaped rock formation characterized by five large boulders standing in a row one next to another. Today, Cinque Torri is home to passionate climbers, but during World War I the area hosted an Italian mountain artillery unit. You will reach Cinque Torri on your hut-to-hut route without a need for deviation. There is a hut in front of Cinque Torri, a good place for lunch and rest. Those hikers who do not need rest can do a loop hike around Cinque Torri which is around 2 km long. From Cinque Torri, it takes not more than 2 hours to reach the Passo Giau area where you will stay overnight.

NOTE. Depending on the availability at the huts along the route, you may need to reach one of the huts behind the Passo Giau pass what increases the hiking time to 6 or 7 hours.

Day 5: Lake Federa

Ascent 330 m. Descent 1350 m. Altitude 1210 - 2360 m. Distance 15 km. Walking time 6 hours.

The final leg of the route lets you explore the Croda da Lago group and see Lake Federa, one of the most scenic lakes of the Dolomites. It lies at the foot of the eastern wall of Croda da Lago. The Dolomites are relatively poor with water for being very old mountains and due to their geological composition. Most lakes in the Dolomites are characterized by a significantly varying water level. Many lakes disappear in the summer. Lake Federa is one of the few Dolomites’ lakes with constant water level, presumably due to the presence of underground springs. It is beautiful all year round. On the west and south, Lake Federa is framed by the nearby standing mountains, while its northern and eastern sides are open thus offering a wide view especially scenic in the afternoon and evenings. From Lake Federa, your route descends to Cortina d’Ampezzo via another lake, Lago d’Ajal, and mostly through the pine forest. There is a possibility of a shortcut that lets you decrease the total descent of the day to 880 meters.

Day 6: Cortina d'Ampezzo

The trip has come to an end. You can leave Cortina d’Ampezzo after breakfast at your hotel. The itinerary you hiked along is relatively short but still let you see some of the most famous landmarks of the Dolomites and stay at authentic mountain huts with long history. While featuring the Dolomites’ landmarks, this route did not take you to the remote paths of the Dolomites which can be rather challenging. The Cortina Dolomites are the mountains most hikers leave with long lasting memories and a heart full of emotions.

5 Day Tour

Shorter route bypassing Tofane and upper Val Travenanzes

This route starts at Col Drusciè, like the main route, but goes straight to the area of Lagazuoi and Passo Falzarego. Thus, it bypasses the high-altitude region of the Tofane Group and requires 3 hiking days instead of 4. Except for the Tofane and upper Val Travenanzes, this itinerary reaches all other landmarks of the region including Lagazuoi - with a lift, Cinque Torri, Nuvolau, and lakes Limedes and Federa.

7 and 8 Day Tours

The main hut-to-hut trek plus 1 or 2 one-day hikes from Cortina

In addition to the hut-to-hut hike, the 7 and 8 Day Tours include one and two one-day hikes respectively. On a day hike, you can explore the Sexten Group and Tre Cime di Lavaredo - one of the most characteristic and recognizable symbols of the Dolomites. Another point of attraction reachable on a day hike is Lake Sorapis. The starting points of both hikes are reachable from Cortina d’Ampezzo by bus. If you choose a 7 or 8 Day Tour, hotel accommodation in Cortina for additional nights will be arranged by us and included in the cost of your trip.

Travel to the Dolomites

The base camp location for this trip is Cortina d'Ampezzo. Venice is the most convenient airport for travel to Cortina. There are direct busses to Cortina from the Venice Marco Polo airport, and it takes around 2h 30m to arrive in Cortina. The Treviso airport is the second convenient option: the travel time is approximately the same.

Depending on the schedule of your flight you may need to stay overnight in Venice to catch the bus.

We can help you plan the logistics and provide you with train and bus schedules: please contact us before you book the flights.

Clothing and Gear

Proper hiking boots are a must for the mountains. We recommend high boots because they support the ankle better than any low boots and provide better stability on a rocky terrain. Even in the middle of the summer in the Dolomites you must bring some warm clothes with you: waterproof and windproof jacket, fleece jacket, long trekking pants and a cap. A raincoat, poncho or other type of rainwear is necessary. Other necessary items are the toiletries, light clean footwear to use in the huts, sunglasses and at least 2 one-liter bottles for water. Your trip documents will include a detailed packing list specifically prepared for your itinerary. We kindly ask everyone to read it carefully and be properly prepared for the hiking trip.

Accommodation

The first and last nights of your trip are in one of our basecamp hotels. While hiking, you will stay overnight in the mountain huts. You can count on the following services in the mountain huts: a bed in a shared room or in a private room (must be booked in advance), shower with hot water, toilets, meals, and a possibility to buy take away water and snacks such as sandwiches and chocolate. Shared rooms are equipped with bunk beds with mattresses, pillows and blankets. Bed linen is not provided in shared bedrooms: you must have a sleeping bag liner with you. Typically, it is a light cotton bag. Warm sleeping bag is unnecessary, since there are blankets in the bedrooms. In private rooms you are often offered bed linen, thus a sleeping bag liner is not required. If you book private rooms, we inform you on whether you need to bring a sleeping bag liner. Most huts have a heating system, but it is normally not required in the summer months. You will need clean footwear for the huts: light slides are an ideal solution. For detailed information on the huts please read Mountain Huts in the Alps.

Meals

In hut-to-hut hiking tours you are served a breakfast and a dinner in the huts and mountain hotels on the route.

Normally, the breakfast is served from 7am to 9am. It usually includes an unlimited quantity of coffee and tea, bread, butter, jam, honey and chocolate spread. In addition, some huts offer ham, cheese and muesli for breakfast. After breakfast we recommend filling your thermos with hot water or tea: ask the staff, and it will be for free in most huts.

The dinner time in the mountain huts is 7pm or 7:30pm for all guests. A typical dinner in a hut is very rich and includes a starter, the first course (such as pasta, risotto, dumplings), the second course (meat with a side dish) and a dessert. Any drinks at dinner (water, wine, beer, tea, coffee) are not free and should be ordered and paid separately.

Lunch. It is possible to stop for lunch in the mountain huts along the route. The lunch menu in the huts is similar to the dinner menu. Typically, there is a choice of pasta for 7 – 10 euros. Second dishes are meat-based and vegetarian. They cost 9 – 16 euros. In alternative, the huts you will stay at can provide you with packed lunch, which typically costs 8 - 12 euros depending on your choice.

Safety Considerations

Our guided hiking tours are led by professional guides, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience and with passion for mountains. They permanently work in the region of the exact hiking tour, have professional licenses, are experts in emergency situations, regularly upgrade their qualifications and work in accordance with national regulations.

For self-guided hiking, it is necessary to be properly dressed, follow the safety rules and make realistic time calculation for day crossings – preferably according to the hiking schedule that we provide. Our self-guided hiking trips are planned so that they do not require specific skills or gear, unless it is clearly specified in the tour description. You can expect well-maintained trails equipped with direction signs. Exposed sections of the trail are secured on the self-guided routes: it makes them safe provided that you follow the basic safety rules for hiking in the mountains.

Mountains are a natural environment with a high level of risk, so we insistently ask all participants to read the safety rules and emergency procedures: Safety Considerations. If you have questions about the safety rules, please contact us +39 0463 63 60 80.

Insurance and Visa

Insurance. It is important to have an appropriate insurance that covers the hiking activity. You don't need to include the climbing activity in your insurance, unless you are planning to climb during the hike.

Visa. We will provide you with a booking confirmation for all days of your trip. If you need the Italian visa, you can enclose this document with your visa application.

Weather in the Dolomites

The most stable weather conditions in the Dolomites are statistically from the second week of July till the middle of September. This period in the Dolomites is characterized by warm sunny weather and modest rainfall. Earlier in June, the weather is normally favorable, but it is less reliable, and the mountain passes may be blocked by snow remaining from the winter. In June we may have to change the route depending on the snow situation on the passes. The second half of September in Dolomites is a beautiful period, but the weather is again less predictable: the probability of incessant rain increases, and it may snow at the altitude above 2,000 meters.

It is never hot in the Dolomites at the elevation of 2,000 m (6,560 ft) and above where most of the hiking routes pass. In a sunny day in August the temperature at 2,000 m can reach 20° C (68° F) suring the warmest hours of the day. It is comfortable for hiking. In a cold cloudy day, the temperature can stay at around 10° C (34° F) during the entire the day. It is always chilly at night and early in the morning. Thunderstorms, often with hail, are typical for the warmest months (July and August). In the Dolomites valleys at the altitudes of 1,000 – 1,500 m (3,280 – 4,920 ft) the day temperature can reach 27° C (80° F). It is fresh in the valleys in the morning and evening, and it is not stuffy at night even in the hottest weeks of the summer.
