Hiking in the Dolomites is an adventure you will never forget. The Dolomites are one of the most impressive mountains in the world and a true paradise for hikers. Contrary to the rest of the Alps, the Dolomites were formed 230 mln years ago as coral reefs, atolls and islands. Subsequent withdrawal of the ocean, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, water and wind shaped the dolostone and defined the Dolomites mountains as they are today. At MONT Trekking, we organize hiking trips in both the most famous and remote mountain groups of the Dolomites. For avid hikers, it is the best way to explore the sublime landscapes of the Dolomites and their unspoilt nature.
Speaking of the Dolomites hiking trips, there are two directions to look at: classic hiking itineraries and off-the-beaten-path itineraries. The highlights of the Dolomites making them world famous are, without a doubt, the classic hiking trips. These are the most walked hiking routes in the Dolomites. They run around Cortina d’Ampezzo, the best-known Dolomites’ resort town. Alta Via No 1 with its variants and the Cortina Dolomites hiking trip connect several most famous landmarks of the region including Lake Braies, Tre Cime, Lagazuoi, Cinque Torri and Monte Pelmo. Other classics are the Fassa Dolomites hiking trip and Alta Via No. 2. They cross the groups of Sella, Sassolungo, Marmolada and Puez-Odle. The unique landscape of the Dolomites, not present in the other parts of the Alps, is the Dolomites’ lunar terrain at 2600 meters of altitude and higher. The best-known lunar landscapes are on the plateaus of Sella and Pale di San Martino. For a first hiking trip in the Dolomites, we definitely recommend one of the classic itineraries.
In alternative, there are hiking routes in the Dolomites few people know about. We call them off-the-beaten-track itineraries at MONT Trekking and design them primarily for hikers with experience. This is where one can walk in solitude and in harmony with nature. These routes run in more remote regions of the Dolomites where one will see wildlife rather than people. Brenta, Zoldo and Friuli are some of these regions. Off-the-beaten-path hiking trips are typically more challenging than the classics. There are lightly maintained trails, longer distances between huts and often demanding terrain.
Thanks to an efficient system of mountain huts, the Dolomites are excellent for multi-day hiking trips. On our trips, hikers walk for several days and always stay in comfort, enjoy good meals and do not need to carry heavy backpacks. Typical accommodation at huts is in dormitories shared by 6-10 guests, but private rooms are available at most huts also. Mountain huts in the Dolomites are manned and equipped with the facilities we are used to, including warm bedrooms, bathrooms with hot shower and a restaurant. In the Dolomites, hut-to-hut hiking trips let you feel the true atmosphere of the mountains without a need of descending to the valleys for the night.
MONT Trekking organizes self-guided and private guided hiking trips in the Dolomites. Self-guided treks offer an opportunity to hike at your own pace along the itineraries designed by our experts and mountain guides. You can enjoy the Dolomites’ breathtaking panoramas and majestic landscapes in total freedom accompanied by your family or friends. There are no strict schedule or other people to follow and no need to rush to the next hut – you can manage your time as you wish. Self-guided hiking routes run along the trails maintained by the Italian Alpine Club (CAI). The CAI trails are inspected regularly, categorized, numbered and marked. MONT Trekking provides hikers with a trip package containing the specialized hiking maps, step-by-step itinerary and hiking schedule for each walking day. We make sure your trip package awaits you at your base camp hotel upon arrival, and we take care of thousands of details in advance.
Most hikers in the Dolomites are self-guided, however professional mountain guides are always in high demand. At MONT Trekking, we organize private guided hiking trips in the Dolomites. You are not joined by others on a private guided trek, and you can choose the dates of your trip and adjust the level of difficulty if you prefer harder or easier hiking schedule than the one proposed in our itineraries. Our mountain guides are passionate hikers and mountaineers dedicated to their job and mountains. Raised in the Dolomites, guides are incredibly knowledgeable of their region. They are proud to show their home mountains to fellow hikers sharing a common interest and passion for the mountains. On a guided hiking trip in the Dolomites, you are sure to see places few tourists are not aware of, and you will see them at the right time. On the day of your arrival in the base camp location, your guide will come to your hotel to welcome you, provide a short briefing and answer questions. Whenever this is required, our private guided hiking trips include transportation to the trailhead from the base camp location and back to hotel after the trek.
Our Dolomites hiking trips are designed to let you see beautiful landscapes and breathtaking views the Dolomites are famous for. We run a range of trips of varying duration and difficulty, and we offer self-guided and private guided formats. There are well-known classic itineraries and off-the-beaten-track routes, but in any case, hiking in the Dolomites is an unforgettable experience regardless of the route you choose.
