The Dolomites are unique and exceptionally beautiful mountains. Our hut to hut hiking tours take you through uncontaminated nature and idyllic landscapes of the Dolomites. The nine mountain ranges composing the Dolomites offer unique alpine sceneries of extreme beauty. They have always been a destination of strong international appeal. Every year thousands of hikers come to hike in the Dolomites. Most are self-guided hikers, while the others prefer to be accompanied by a local Alpine Guide.

One of the key characteristics of the Dolomites is an extensive network of mountain huts or “rifugio” in Italian. One can hike for 2 weeks in the Dolomites hut to hut and always find comfortable accommodation and boarding at mountain huts. Many huts are set in great locations at high altitude thus making it unnecessary to descend to the valleys for the night. MONT Trekking organizes around 20 Dolomites hut to hut hiking tours that rely on huts entirely. They vary in length and difficulty level to meet the expectations of passionate hikers of varying level of fitness. There are even possibilities for travellers who never participated in a hut to hut tour.

In the past, huts were constructed to serve as shelters in case of adverse meteorological conditions. Many huts were built at the edge of the 19th and 20th centuries and have undergone several upgrades since then. Nowadays, the Dolomites huts have become comfortable establishments equipped with most facilities we are used to. In the Dolomites, there are huts owned by CAI (Italian Alpine Club) and privately owned huts. CAI appoints managers for its huts or rents them out. Managers are often ex-guides, and they normally run their hut on their own with their family. The CAI huts are normally at higher altitude and in isolated positions. Managers of the CAI huts must follow the regulation set by CAI which covers all aspects of their work including the provision of services and the rates. Private huts are property of individuals who are almost always local people managing their hut for generations..

During your Dolomites hut to hut hike you may choose to stay overnight in a dormitory or in a private room. Dormitories are a traditional type of accommodation available at almost all huts. Normally, a dormitory is shared by 8-16 guests. Lager dormitories are unusual but exist. Use of a sleeping bag liner is compulsory in dormitories. In alternative, many huts offer rooms for two, three or four guests for private use only by you and your friends or family accompanying you. Private rooms are few in huts, and they need to be reserved early.

Regardless of the length of your hut to hut tour, there is no need to carry heavy backpacks in the Dolomites. Bathrooms with sinks are available at all huts. Hot water and showers are available at almost all huts in the Dolomites. In MONT Trekking, the price of Dolomites hut to hut hiking tours includes half board - you can enjoy traditional Dolomites breakfast and dinner during you hike in the authentic atmosphere of mountain huts. There are huts staying 3-4 hours away one from another in most regions of the Dolomites. It lets reduce the size of your backpack, because the huts along your route serve lunch during the day.

Finally, the trails in the Dolomites are marked and maintained very well. Also, it’s worth mentioning that hut managers are expert and knowledgeable of their mountains (as we said, most of them are ex-guides). They love their mountains and are always keen to offer information and advice.
